Description
Key aspects of the project included investigating and rehabilitating the existing depressed slab, remediating soils, installing new lighting, electrical service, panels, and separate metering. Additionally, it encompassed the installation of a new kitchen, hotline, bar, and food service counter, as well as new acoustic ceiling panels and a glazed vestibule. The project involved rehabilitating the existing stone fireplaces, installing new HVAC systems, including a new enclosure/room, and replacing the existing range hood. It further included creating a new stage area equipped with a sound and lighting system.
The newly created Arbor Room offers a welcoming environment to the campus community, characterized by its bright and clean bistro-pub style ambiance – a new, informal communal space tailored specifically to the campus.

The project featured the presence of numerous remarkable heritage features deserving preservation within the building’s interior. Many of these features had been removed from the restaurant proper over the past century. However, DPAI made efforts to conserve and restore two stone fireplaces and collaborated with the University’s lock shop to preserve and restore original solid wood doors. Each decision during the project carefully considered the potential impact on heritage features affected by new construction, with measures taken to minimize disruption to architectural details in areas such as corridors and existing exhaust pathways in commercial kitchens.
